Thanks to all who are following my blog, Eclectic Homeschool 4 Life. I am transfering this blog to A Season for All Things. I invite all my friends to come on over and follow the new blog.

A Season for All Things will incorporate our homeschool walk along with chronicling our family life and Christian walk.

Since we are all walking through different seasons in our lives, this new blog will hopefully bring joy and laughter, a peek into our completely imperfect family, thought provoking ideas, and more. I look forward to meeting up with my Eclectic Homeschool followers there. ~ Ellen

I will no longer be updating this blog as of 1/1/11. As part of my new year goal-planning, I am combining the blogs to have better use of my time. Thanks for all your comments and encouragement. I look forward to seeing you at A Season for All Things.

The Walk

In The Walk, Shaun stresses the importance of order in becoming a mature Christian. He lays out 5 stages that each person can walk through: Unbeliever, Believer, Example, Teacher, and Imparter. He states that if a believer were to "skip a stage in the maturity process, error will creep in. Get ahead of God, and things will start to go wrong. But follow His (God's) order in your life, and you will see amazing things happen." p. 21

He breaks each stage down into becoming a Believer, Example, etc and expands on the trials, traps, and victories of each stage. As you walk through this book, Shaun gives concrete examples not only from his football days, but also real life situations many people can relate to. He cites Scripture throughout the book, yet many times they are only referenced. A Discussion Guide is available for small groups to read together.

I feel that Shaun Alexander over-stresses the order of the stages and not enough on the actual learning and living of each. He does state near the end that different people will proceed through the stages at different rates - some faster than other.

Advent Reflections 2010

Day 1 – God promised his people that He would send the Messiah, the Anointed One, to save them. Isaiah 7.14, 9.6-7

Day 2 – God’s timing is always perfect; He knew the perfect time to send JESUS, the Messiah, into the world. Galatians 4.4

Day 3 – “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I, Ellen, am the worst.” 1 Timothy 1.14-16

Day 4 – Remember that Christmas is a time to share our blessings and become generous, honest, cheerful givers. “…it is more blessed to give than receive.” Acts 20.35

Day 5 – Jesus has come to live among us. I am to live each day knowing that Jesus was physically present in my home, always. Revelation 21.3

Day 6 – As a believer, I am God’s servant. He can do anything You want with me. Luke 1.28-30, 47-49, 54-55

Day 7 – Name Him Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew) which means “the Lord saves.” Luke 1.31, Matthew 1.20-21, Philippians 2.10-11

Day 14 – When Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem for the mandatory census, all the rooms were taken. Jesus, the Son of God, was born in a stable and laid to rest in a manger. I need to make room in my heart, my thoughts, and my time/schedule for Jesus to enter in. Luke 2.1-20

Day 15 – After Jesus was born, He was wrapped in strips of cloth – swaddling clothes- the clothing of the humble and lowly. I need to be clothed in humility daily. Luke 2.7, Colossians 3.12, 1 Peter 3.3-4

Day 16 – Jesus’ birth brings JOY to all who accepts Him as Lord and Savior. Luke 2.9-11, 20; John 15.10-11

Day 17 – God’s glory is revealed in the birth and life of Jesus Christ. Luke 2.9, 2 Corinthians 4.6

Day 18 – God sent not one, but a host of angels, to announce the birth of His son – the Prince of Peace. Luke 2.13-14

Day 19 – Christ became poor to open the door to God’s riches---- salvation. Christmas is about giving, not getting. What are you giving this season? 2 Corinthians 8.9

Day 20 – The shepherds went to Bethlehem to see what the angels told them. They left the stable believing in Jesus and sharing the good news! Luke 2.15-17

Day 21 – On Jesus’ birthday we come and give ourselves and our worship to Him with great JOY! Matthew 2.1-2, 10

Day 22 – Jesus was born to die for my sins. When the kings came to worship Him, they brought gold (gift for a king), frankincense (grain offering pleasing to God), and myrrh (to be used when He died). Isaiah 60.3, 6; Matthew 2.11

Day 23 – Jesus saved me from my slavery to sin. HE is my Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9.6-7

An Amish Love

An Amish Love includes three novellas written by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, and Kelly Long. Each story stands on its own, yet each is set in the same place and time. Because of this, the three novellas are tied together by a thread including references to other characters, especially the Bishop.

Healing Hearts, by Beth Wiseman, draws us into a marriage which has had a rocky year. How do Levina and Naaman pick up the pieces of the marriage after Naaman returns after an 11-month disappearance?

A Marriage of the Heart, by Kelly Long, introduces us to a young woman who has been raised soley by her father. Her mother passed away when she was 5 years old; and now, Abby seeks to leave the close-knit community. Suddenly, she finds herself married to a newcomer to the community. How do they both learn to love without expectations? Is she able to find peace and love in the Amish lifestyle she was hoping to leave?

What the Heart Sees, by Kathleen Fuller, draws us into Ellie's life 5 years after a tragic accident has claimed her eyesight. She longs for life before the accident and wants only to become a wife and mother; yet, she feels that she is no longer capable of having her dream. Only when a her best friend's brother returns to the community is she able to see past herself. Through helping Christopher come to terms with the accident and his loss, the two begin healing.

I love the way the 3 stories are interwoven! Each is a reminder of the forgiveness we are to show others, Christian or not. In Ellie's case, we are not bound by our disabilities. We can find assistance and make a way to serve others.

Chief Vann House

We enjoyed a field trip to the Chief Vann House Historic Site in Chatsworth, GA as part of our US History.

During the 1790s, James Vann became a Cherokee Indian leader and wealthy businessman. He established the largest and most prosperous plantation in the Cherokee Nation, covering 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County. In 1804 he completed construction of a beautiful 2 ½-story brick home that was the most elegant in the Cherokee Nation. After Vann was murdered in 1809, his son Joseph inherited the mansion and plantation. Joseph was also a Cherokee leader and became even more wealthy than his father.

In the 1830s almost the entire Cherokee Nation was forced west by state and federal troops on the infamous Trail of Tears. The Vann family lost their elegant home, rebuilding in the Cherokee Territory of Oklahoma. Today the Vann House survives as Georgia’s best-preserved historic Cherokee Indian home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the house which features beautiful hand carvings, a remarkable “floating” staircase, a 12-foot mantle and fine antiques.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room by Nancy Guthrie

Each year as we approach the Advent / Christmas season, I promise myself that we are going to focus on Jesus... not our busy-ness. Each year I pull out the Advent devotionals, Advent calendar, and the Advent candles. And yet, each year my good intentions go undone or are so hit-and-miss that we really are not focusing on the birth of Jesus.

Not this year! After reading through Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room by Nancy Guthrie, I know my good intentions will become a reality! Each day's reading is short enough to keep the interest of the youngest in the family and includes Discussion Starters to challenge your older teens and adults. These questions help focus the discussion on Jesus and include additional Bible verses to read and ponder. Interspersed through the book are Christmas hymns, not only the hymns, but also background on the music, words, and history of the time. Also, each reading includes a prayer to help focus our eyes on Jesus.

This is a great resource and I look forward to spending quality time with the family as we remember and celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

A Time to Embrace by Karen Kingsbury

A Time to Embrace is a beautifully woven story about forgiveness and love. Abby and John Reynolds have just survived 3 years of an unhappy marriage which almost ended in divorce. A Time to Embrace picks up just after they have forgiven each other’s transgressions - John’s for spending too much time with another woman, and Abby’s for becoming too close to her magazine editor via email. They have renewed their vows and are more in love with each other than before. They put God first in their lives, and are seeing the blessings of being in God’s will.

As John struggles with the politics of being a high school football coach, he is still working on encouraging and loving his students and players. He not only wants to see them succeed now, but also is training them for life. After winning a football game, he is involved in a horrific accident. During his recovery, he and Abby both struggle with God’s involvement in their “new” life. The promises of God are written throughout this wonderful book! Romans 8.28 teaches us “…that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Karen Kingsbury has reminded us again to put God first in our marriages and in life! For an uplifting read, pick up both A Time to Dance and A Time to Embrace and walk through a slice of John and Abby’s life together. You won’t be disappointed.

God's Extravagant Generosity

"Have you ever come on anything quite like this extravagant generosity of God, this deep, deep wisdom? It's way over our heads. We'll never figure it out.

Is there anyone around who can explain God?

Anyone smart enough to tell him what to do?

Anyone who has done him such a huge favor

that God has to ask his advice?

Everything comes from him;

Everything happens through him;

Everything ends up in him.

Always glory! Always praise!

Yes. Yes. Yes."

What a convicting piece of scripture. I was introduced to this translation at the Women of Faith conference last weekend. The conference centered around Romans 11.33a focusing on the 'extravagant generosity of God.' Since this translation was new to me, I looked up the same verse (Rom. 11.33a) in NASB, which state, "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God..."

I have been meditating on the "extravagant generosity of God." God sprinkles blessing on us without asking us for anything in return. Or does He? We are to be the hands and feet of Jesus, His Son, loving all the people He has put on our path. Am I doing this? Unfortunately, no.

The verses go on reiterating God's sovereignty in all things. Really, who am I to think I know more than the God of the universe? Even though there are times I don't understand what God is doing in my life, I must trust and believe that He is who He says He is. He will accomplish what He will in my life with or without my help. I can look back over my life and see where God has truly brought beauty from the ashes of my life. Thank you GOD!

The section of scripture ends with reminders of who God is... our Provider, the source of all things (including me), and He rules the world with perfect wisdom, justice, and love. In all things, we are to bring glory to Him. Praise the Lord!

Thankful Hearts

During this Thanksgiving season, I take the time to consider all the blessings in my life. I am thankful for my family.

Rod, my husband, is the sole bread-winner and works very hard to supply our needs (and wants). He is a realtor, and even though we have had some months of no paychecks (like 3 months straight!), our bills are paid on time and we have more than enough food.

My oldest son, Robert, married a wonderful woman in July... welcome to the family, Mallorie! They have moved to Texas to be close to his son, Xander. They are working on putting Christ first in their life. What more can you ask for?

Matt, Melissa, and Michael continue to bless my life in how they complete their schoolwork and participate in outside activities - Matt's theater, Melissa's sports, and Michael's good-natured personality and love of camping! A smile, a hug, an "I love you, Mom" all make my heart sing! God has made each one so unique that they all bring special blessing to our family!

I'm thankful to have my parents living near us. They moved to our area in January, and since they are snowbirds, are still acclimating to the area. They are active in our lives and the lives of our children.

I thank the LORD for his many blessing we receive year round. Many of them we don't even recognize or acknowledge. Others seem so trivial... the sunrise, a flower blooming, a garden growing, a cool breeze on a warm night..... I could go on forever. The truth is... "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." ~ John 3.16 (NIV). God's greatest blessing to me came when I was a sinner and in opposition to Him, and He still sent Jesus to die for my sins!

Women of Faith

"Have you ever come on anything quite like this extravagant generosity of God...?" ~ Romans 11.33

God loves us more than we know. He gives us more than we can ask or dream. He's unrestrained... excessive... outrageous... Over the Top.

This past weekend I had the privilege of going to the Women of Faith Conference in NC with my mom and sister. We had a great time being together and hearing God through the amazing speakers. What a refreshing time for us as a group and for me personally. What would God have me hear in my heart? Are there changes in my ~~very near future~~ present? What have I withheld from God?

Patsy Clairmont

Patsy Clairmont was able to speak to all the moms who have prayed for God to heal their child. She shared the dark days last year when her adult son battled the H1N1 flu to the point of coma. By God's grace, he is alive today, but still fights chronic pain. She is witty, hilarious and is transparent in her love for GOD. From Patsy I was reminded to TRUST God in everything, not just what I think I can't handle.

The Chapmans

Mary Beth Chapman really spoke to my mother's heart as she shared the devastating loss of her daughter last year. My parents buried my brother in 1986; Dad had a very hard time after his death. Steven Curtis Chapman and his band gave a concert... WOW!

Lisa Welchel

Lisa Welchel described her challenge in forming lasting adult friendships. During the time most teenagers learn about healthy friendships, she was filming The Facts of Life. All of her "friendships" were written in by the writers. So when she became an adult, she didn't know how to reach out to others and form healthy, safe friendships. She reminded us all how important our girlfriends/moms/sisters are to our overall well-being. From Lisa I was reminded how important our girlfriends are! They are confidants, encouragers, truth-tellers, and accountability partners.

Sandi Patty

Sandi Patty moved us not only with her beautiful singing voice, but also with her testimony. Her voice is unmatched; it leaves you breathless. She even "signs" some of her songs with and for the hearing impaired. She shared her struggle with weight throughout her life. I had no trouble relating to her story. Her courage to undergo GI surgery and talk about it give me the courage to try the weight-loss thing one more time. Thanks, Patty!

Marilyn Meberg regaled us with her wit, laughter, honesty, and such wonderful Biblical insights. She walked us through issues that are holding us back from a 'vibrant relationship with God.' We were challenged to invite God into our dark places and give our cares/fears/guilt/shame to Him. She is one of my favorite speakers because she brings her teaching down to my level! You have to realize, she has 2 Master Degrees behind her name!

Anita Renfroe

My all-time favorite is Anita Renfroe.. Need I say more! Christian, comedian, mother, wife (pastor's), singer.. all rolled into one fun-filled lady! I have 3 DVD's and when I'm feeling down, I'll put them in and laugh all over again. Her insights into human nature are amazing and she doesn't shy away from the hard issues like.... mammograms, caffeine, and underwire! She is my all-time pick-me-up!

Dramas are always life-changing. Deborah Winans' were no different. She touched on the issue of abortion and the need for counseling. She opened the door for those experiencing the loss of a child by abortion to seek help and healing. Her other skit touched on our desires to get our way, anyway we can. We put our "hook" in others to get them to do our bidding. A timely reminder especially while raising 3 teenagers!

I have looked forward to the Women of Faith Conferences each year because I was able to spend time with just my mom. This year, my sister was able to join us. We were away from all our daily activies and stress and had a ball! I wonder what next year will bring!

The American Patriot's Almanac

The American Patriot's Almanac by William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb, published by Thomas Nelson, was everything I expected and more! This newly revised, updated and expanded almanac includes a slice of our great country's history alongside the daily "American History Parade."

I enjoyed reading through the historical events which left such in impact on our country. My whole family enjoyed looking up their birthday to see who had the most exciting historical events.

Since we are learning US History this year, we have been able to review such documents as: The Declaration of Independence (and how it was written and signed), The Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights, and the American Creed - just to name of few.

Each year our students in the public schools are learning a different US History from previous generations. This Almanac helps bridge that gap and gives an insight into the Christian founding principles of America.

Per the author, "Our nation's founding principles of liberty and equality are among humanity's noblest aspirations. I began blogging because of a friend's blog ~~was~~ IS awesome! Kris walked me through the baby steps of blogging and I still ask for her input. She is an encourager both in person and online.

I have made connections with other women who also home educate, try to seek God daily, and ~~like~~ need to save money. There are so many creative, intelligent, wisdom-filled blogs; I just can't follow them all, all the time. SHUCKS! I am in awe of their writing skills and humor as they walk through the good times and the bad.

A Simulation of Plastic Rock

Plastic Rock is a rock that behaves like something between a liquid and a solid. Scientists believe that the earth's mantle has this type of rock flowing through its asthenosphere.

A simple experiment using water and corn starch will simulate the properties of Plastic Rock. Follow these simple steps and enjoy your experiment!

1) Put one cup of cornstarch into a shallow pan (pie plate works well).

2) Add 2/3 cup of water.

3) Stir until you have an evenly mixed, white liquid. (it should be hard to stir in the beginning)

4) Add another 1/2 cup cornstarch to the mixture.

5) As you stir the mixture, you should begin to see some interesting properties. As you stir, the mixture should solidify, making it more difficult to mix. However, when you stop, the mixture should liquify again.

6) Play with this mixture! Pick some up and squeeze it in your hand... it should harden. Open your hand and see what happens!

7) When you are done having fun - we played with it for about 30 minutes- clean up with hot water.

Plastic Rock is slowly liquifying from hand above to below.

Note: if you don't see this behavior, your mixture may be incorrect. If it remains liquidy, add more cornstarch; if it is too hard, add water a little at a time until you get the desired consistency.

Fall Festivities

What Fall Festivities do you have in your home school?

When my kids were younger, we enjoyed a lot of hands-on fun like painting pumpkins, Halloween cookies and costumes, Fall Festivals at the church, and decorating the home. But, for some reason, these activities no longer appeal to teenagers. I really don't know why?!?! Michael (age 14) enjoys carving pumpkins and has created 2 hauntingly eerie faces so far.

Since most of the hands-on fun is in our past, we do enjoy running around the corn maize with fellow homeschoolers! The pictures below are from our trip to the Rock City Corn Maize just south of Chattanooga, TN.

Homeschool uniforms?

Do you have specific "uniforms" for your homeschool students on school days? Gee, I'm lucky if they are up and ready to start school by 9 AM!

Here's the run-down:

Michael (14) is always the first one ready. His favorite school uniform is his pajamas! He will change around lunchtime or just before we need to leave for an outside class, etc.

Melissa (almost 17) is the last one out of bed on any given morning. She schools in her pajamas or a warm-up outfit. Today, we enjoyed her company as she joined us in warm-up pants, hoodie (tied tight around her face, and fuzzy socks.... Got to love her! A fashionista in the making!

Matt (almost 17) begins school in his clothes for the day. He is usually in his jeans and one of his favorite t-shirts. He is definitely preparing for his future, as some days he swaps out his t-shirt for a button-down shirt! Maybe he dresses for the 'drama' of it all!

As for me, I'd love to hang out in my PJ's, but it just isn't feasible. We do have a "PJ Day" and we all look forward to it!

How does a home schooler change a light bulb?

So, how does a home schooler change a light bulb?

First, I ask to see who hasn't had the fun of changing a light bulb.

Secondly, we read up on how circuits work.

Then, we call all the kids together and build a circuit to learn how the electricity runs through the it.

Lastly, we work as one to change the light bulb feeling proud of our accomplishment!

PSAT/NMSQT

Well, my two high school juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT on October 13th. After much discussion, we decided that this would be a good trial run before taking the SAT in May. The college boards give each student a test-taking guide which includes a list of the scholarship competitions. Matt read through more of this information and shared it with his sister.

The only downside was that the same 2 teenagers have been taking a 6-week ACT Prep Course for the upcoming ACT this Saturday, October 23rd. Each of these tests are graded differently, so I hope and pray it didn't mess them up.

How are you navigating the college testing waters?

College Testing

We are completely immersed in the college testing this year. As a family, we have been trying to decide which test is better: the ACT or the SAT. I have come to the conclusion that the test must match your student's learning/personality style.

Huh? I said the same thing at first. Here is what I have learned.

What does each test cover?

ACT: Tests knowledge learned in high school. This test focuses on grammar and punctuation. If your student excels in memorization of facts either in or outside the context they were taught, the ACT may be the test for them. Again, this tests material already learned!

SAT: More of an aptitude test. It is better suited to the student who has good deductive reasoning skills, which will be used and developed throughout college. It also concentrates more on vocabulary than on basic grammar and punctuation. Students who are good test-takers usually perform better on the SAT.

How are the tests formatted?

ACT: All sections are multiple choice and contain four (4) tests covering: English, reading, mathematics, and science. An optional 30-minute writing test is available to measure the student's ability to develop and write an essay.

SAT: Multiple-choice tests consisting of two parts: Mathematics and Critical Reading (includes science, history, and literature). An optional writing section is available for the student to write an essay in 25 minutes. The Math includes a multiple-choice format and a section where the student works out the problem and writes their own answer.

How are the tests scored?

ACT: When the ACT is scored, all incorrect answers are discarded and only the correct answers make up the final score. A 36 is a perfect score. The essay portion is scored separately and a perfect will be a 6.

SAT: The SAT slightly penalizes incorrect answers on the multiple-choice questions but not on the written ones (in math). Each section is worth 800 points; so a perfect score, including the essay portion, will be a 2400. If you are only taking the Critical Reading and Math, a perfect score will be a 1600.

Our teens will be taking both tests this year as high school juniors. We are not submitting them to any college, even though a specific number can be forwarded free. The reason for testing this year is to allow us time to focus on any weak areas now. Then, they have next year to retest and increase their scores. If, by the grace of God, one or both do exceptionally well, then we will have the scores sent to some colleges.

Lunchtime doldrums... or not

Since I have 3 teenagers, lunchtime is no longer a "mom-centered" meal. Most days, they will eat dinner leftovers or sandwiches. Yet, on some special days, I will plan ahead. Here are some of their favorites:

1. Cheese or cheese and chicken quesedillas (I have precooked chicked breasts in freezer!)

2. Chef Boy-r-dee pizza kits... remember to add your own mozzarella cheese

3. Hot Pockets

4. Breakfast... pancakes, waffles or breakfast sandwiches

Can you say Happy Dance?

Since Saturday, I have enjoyed many blessings. I have danced the "happy dance" six times now! Why? I hoped you would ask...

Happy Dance #1 - My front brake work was FREE on Saturday. I was 150 miles from the end of the warranty period with brakes squealing so bad I had to get to the shop. So, new brakes on the front of the van.. did I say FREE!

Happy Dance #2 - I have the best husband in the world.. just celebrated 18 wonderful years! We are celebrating with dinner at Blue Orleans on Wednesday night!

Happy Dance #3 - I received the Women of Faith tickets for their November conference today in the mail. I am going with my mom and sister --- girl time!

Happy Dance #4 - Michael and I had a smooth transition to new World Geography program Around the World in 180 Days!

Happy Dance #5 - Lifeway had the student book for Around the World in 180 Days!

Happy Dance #6 - Today has been a GREAT Monday! Introduced new US History program (US History Through Our Country's Presidents) to Matthew and Melissa. It is a go! Actually heard, "It sounds like fun!"

God is so good! It has been a very stressful and overwhelming couple of weeks. Thank you, LORD!

Homeschool Village Blast From The Past

Today The Homeschool Village's Thursday link up theme is Blast From the Past! We're sharing school photos and memories from our favorite teacher. The Village asks:

Who made a positive impression on you? Who's words have stuck with you all through the years? Have you carried over any of their traits into you own homeschool?

My favorite teacher was Senora Garcimonde. She taught Spanish 4, 5, and 6 at South Plantation High School. She had high expectations and I flourished with her. I was the only non-native student in the class of only 6-8 students. All the other students were from a latino background. We were not allowed to use any English in her class; even the speeches we gave, were all in Spanish. I came out of that class completely bilingual.

She also made it a lot of fun. Since the school was in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, we had many opportunities to interact with the Spanish population in Miami. We went to plays, operas, and movies completely in Spanish and enjoyed many lunches out with her. The best memory... going into Miami for the Cinco de Maya festival!

I still have her recipe for Arroz con Pollo (rice with chicken)!

Water's Cohesion

Let's start with the definition of cohesion. Cohesion is "the phenomenon that occurs when individual molecules are so strongly attracted to each other that they tend to stay together, even when exposed to tension." Per Apologia's Exploring Creation with Physical Science, "water molecules are attracted to one another by hydrogen bonds as well as the electrical charges that are the result of polarity. Because they are attracted to one another, they do not like to be pulled apart.

To visually see this, we performed two (2) experiments.

1) Supplies needed: small metal paper clips, bowl of water, small piece of toilet paper, and dish soap.

First, we filled a bowl with water. Then, we cut a piece a toilet paper about 2 inches longer and wider than our small metal paper clip. Set the paper clip on the paper and place it gently on the surface of the water. After the paper drops to the bottom, the paper clip should be floating.

The cohesion of the water molecules allows the water strider to "walk" on water! Since the water molecules want to stay close together, it forms a 'skin' on the water, called surface tension.

Now, let's see what happens when you break the hydrogen bonds. Add 1-2 drops of liquid dish soap to the bowl of water. What happens? The bonds are broken and the paper clip drops to the bottom of the bowl.

2) Supplies needed: a clean penny, water dropper, and water.

This is a simple experiment but also shows how strong the bonds in water molecules are. Rinse the penny in water and place on a flat surface. Fill a small glass with water and fill the eye dropper with water. Now, drop the water onto the penny one drop at a time. Count how many drops your penny can hold. We were able to get to 33-40 drops before the water spilled over the side.

If you look closely, you can see the 'bubble' over the penny. How many drops does your penny hold?

Longsuffering

In the Bible there are two words that are used in the New Testament which talk about Patience.

There is, of course, patience. And then there is Long-suffering. We don’t like that word much because our very nature seems to be repulsed by it… Long-suffering.

Suffering … Long.

Suffering a lonnnnnnng time.

But it isn’t just any kind of suffering Long-suffering is talking about. Patience is what we seek when we have a trying situation to go through. Long-Suffering is what we need when we are dealing with people.

Long-suffering means that we have patience with people.

God expects that we will have difficult people in our lives and He knows that it will sometimes be painful. So He calls us to suffer a long time with people, be patient with them, while He is working out His plan in our lives and in their lives.

How can we refuse to be Long-suffering with others when we know how long God has suffered with our own foolishness?

This week’s Homekeeper’s Journal is all about Long-suffering ….

God has worked in my life regarding patience and long-suffering in these ways ………… by allowing me to "suffer" through some bad life choices; thus, allowing me the sweetness of His answer to my prayer.

The hardest part of showing long-suffering is …………. not allowing my flesh to take control of the situation or loving the person through their season of long-suffering. (Keeping my mouth shut.)

The most rewarding part of showing long-suffering is ……….. living the gospel of loving others through it; rejoicing with them when it is over!

The one kind situation that I have the most trouble showing long-suffering in is ……… when the long-suffering was brought on by poor choices and the person isn't "doing" anything to 'right the wrong.'

I see how kindness goes hand in hand with long-suffering because ………. it shows God's love to those around you.

I want others to show long-suffering to me when ……… I'm indecisive or working through a bout of mild depression.

God shows long-suffering to me in these ways ……….. always loving me and bringing me closer to Him by whom he places in my life.

Ephesians 4:1b-2 says ….. "I (Paul) urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. ²Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."

This week I will begin to ask God to ……….. give me long-suffering patience and humility while still parenting teenagers and the words to bring them to a more intimate relationship with Him.

Lord, show me how to love my teens through this season in their lives.

Plastic Rock... can it be!

Science experiments… Yippee! Plastic rock flows like a thick liquid and then solidifies when you squeeze it or subject it to an abrupt force. Put 1 cup cornstarch in a pan and add 2/3 cup water; stir until evenly mixed. Next add ½ cup more cornstarch. As you mix it, it should solidify. Leave it alone, it should liquefy again. Put some in your hand… squeeze – solid, cup your hand – liquid.

The above experiment is from the Physical Science book (ed. 2) p. 136-137.

The Falling Away by T.L. Hines

The Falling Away draws us into the life of Dylan Runs Ahead, a member of Montana's Crow Indian tribe, after returning home from serving in Iraq disarming IED's. He is running, as his name suggests, but not ahead. He is running away - from his family, his people, his past... and himself. As Dylan searches for a reason to continue living, he is befriended by others who are trying to persuade him to their chosen path for him. Will he follow this true calling, or will the evil one draw him into the depths of depravity.

From the first chapter, I was drawn into the story of Dylan Runs Ahead. What was he going to do? Where was he going? Would he get help with his addiction? Why did he feel responsible?

When the author introduces the other main characters, I had trouble following who they were and the part they had in the story. As I read, the chapters switched back and forth, sometimes to different characters, but also in time and space - past and present. I also kept trying to find the Christian theme. Near the end of the book, both the Christian theme and the main characters parts became clearer.

I give this book a rating of 3 out of 5. I enjoyed the story, but it was not always clear as to the time, place, etc.

Experiment 4.1 Apologia

Our experiment today used a 9-volt battery, salt water made with Epson salt, a glass, 2 test tubes, and safety glasses. By using the battery, we were breaking the water molecule down to hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.

First, we made the salt water and submerged the battery for ten minutes, terminals up, to remove the trapped air from the battery.

Next, we used a large mixing bowl to make more of the salt solution. We then filled the test tubes completely with the solution. After carefully moving the filled test tubes to the glass with the battery, we simultaneously placed them upside down over the battery's terminals. We made sure we had no air in the tubes by keeping the tips immersed in the salt water.

Once the test tubes were collecting the Oxygen and Hydrogen, we monitored the experiment to see how much of each gas was produced.

We learned that the negative terminal battery produced hydrogen gas while the positive terminal collected Oxygen. (Hydrogen is on the left!) There was twice as much Hydrogen as Oxygen. With our simple experiment, we were able to "see" the chemical formula for water - H(2)O.

Each experiment requires a written laboratory report. Michael is working on his for this lab!

Weekly Wrap-up ~ Our Chaotic Week

This week was most definitely a week of endurance - from helping with one of two Open Houses for my husband's real estate business on Sunday, to being out yesterday from 7:15 am - 3:30 pm. We did enjoy one celebratory lunch on Thursday; wait, I'm getting ahead of myself.

This week the 6-week ACT Prep course began for Matthew and Melissa. It meets on Mondays (1:25 - 3:25 pm) and Tuesday/Thursday afternoons (1:40 - 2:55 pm). Add in their 8 AM Chemistry class on Thursday morning and you get a glimpse of our week.

We had the privilege of watching Melissa play in three soccer games, none of which were at the home field. The team lost the first two, but WON last night against Tellico Plains. Hooray! She is normally a defender, but was substituted in as an offender and had the chance to score two goals. (Oh, so close!)

Add in a morning worship and a church fellowship dinner on Sunday, Boy Scouts and theater practice on Tuesday evening, and youth group on Wednesday. Can I tell you we are exhausted?

The highlight of our week happened on Tuesday morning. Matthew, after many years of cultivating a close friendship with the orthodontist, had his braces removed. I'm not sure who was more excited, him or me! His smile is amazing. Check out the pictures below... (I couldn't find a good 'before' pic!)

We celebrated with a celebratory lunch at Steak-n-Shake on Thursday. Two done and one more to go!

Today, I am sitting in Panera Bread in Dalton awaiting van repairs. Why is it that when vehicles, homes, etc. get older, the cost to repair them increases? The part alone to fix the anti-lock braking system/traction costs over $500. Do you think they will throw in the labor for free?

Hopefully our family will get a time of relaxation over the weekend before next week begins!

Cook's Academy Home School Rules

2. Complete all work in a timely manner.

3. Incomplete work will be returned for completion.

4. If you don't understand the work, ask for help from Mom or a sibling. Do not continue until you understand the concept, etc.

5. Be ready to start on time each morning. (We have outside classes which on some days shortens our school days.)

6. Encourage and help the others.

School-time Discipline

Why does the word 'discipline' shoot fear in the hearts of our kids? Let's start with the Biblical definition.

Discipline:
(Greek paideia, 2 Tim. 3.16) instruction;
in classic Greek paideia means education. (1)

Per my Life Application Study Bible condordance,
discipline means to 'punish, guide, and instruct.'

I don't believe in punishment, just for punishment sake. All correction needs to be with the goal to deal with the heart issues of the child. I believe we, as Christian parents, need to provide both instruction and education to our kids. In this way, they will know, per the Bible, how to live a life glorifying God.

This discipline reaches over into our school time. When our kids were younger, I felt like I was constantly "training" one them. We also learned that immediate correction had longer lasting results because the discipline was directly linked to the infraction.

How did we accomplish this? First, I would remove the child from the classroom setting into their bedroom. This gave us privacy from the rest of the family. Next, I would ask the child why (s)he was being disciplined. If (s)he couldn't tell me, we would review the behavior and why it is inappropriate. At this point, if they truly didn't know the right and wrong of the particular problem, their punishment was strickly a verbal warning. If the child could tell me what (s)he did and why it was wrong, then that child would receive the the full punishment. In both senarios, the child needed to back to the offended party, admit the wrong, apologize, and ask for forgiveness. I believe the hardest part of the discipline process was the admitting the 'wrong' publicly. (I'm sorry I for ____________, will you forgive me?)

I learned the hard way not to use schoolwork as punishment. This was one sure-fire way to extinguish any desire to learn. The student may also lose privileges such as ipods, hand-held gaming systems and wii, or extracurricular activities. These seemed to work temporarily.

Not all interruptions are heart issues. Sometimes they are just a hint that we need to take a break. Learning to tell the difference helped make our school time more pleasant for all!

Here are some verses which we have leaned on during our kid's growing up years:

Proverbs 13:24b (NIV) "He who loves him (his son) is careful to discipline him."

Proverbs 22.6 "Train a child in the way he should go, ane when he is old he will not depart from it."

Ephesians 6.4 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."

And some verses for us and the kids:

1 Timothy 4.7-8 "Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."

2 Timothy 3.16-17 " All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

I would presume most home schools are primarily run by mom. Our's is no different. Yet, I couldn't home school our 3 kids without his support.

My husband’s main involvement is praying for our school, the students, and the teacher. Many days I try to run ahead of God and do school on my own. Usually, these are the days that we have problems. Knowing Rod is also covering our school in prayer is so comforting.

He also is an insightful advisor and counselor. When I begin to question if a problem is me, the curriculum, or the students, he is able to step back and see the whole picture. He is then able to find a solution without emotions and tears.

Rod spends a lot of time with the kids. He just had a fun-filled weekend in Gainesville, FL, at the University of Florida. They participated in the college tour and took in the first Gator football game of the year. He has been our daughter's varsity's team assistant basketball coach, plays Frisbee golf with the boys, Cub Scout and now, Boy Scout leader, etc. He tries to give me some free time (sans kids) in the evenings so I can catch up with paperwork or just enjoy some quiet time.

Once, in a great while, I need to call him in as the PRINCIPAL to deal with academic shortcomings or attitude problems. Why do the kids seem to respond faster to him than me?

Let’s define our terms ….

Nest - a snug retreat or refuge; resting place; home.

Nesting - to build or have a nest

In my neck of the woods its getting cooler and Autumn isn’t far away. Its time to start nesting and get my home cozy and comfortable for the cooler days ahead. I want to create a retreat from the world, a resting place, home.

Get your thinking caps on and lets talk about how we can arrange, order, decorate and change our homes so that they are a warm wonderful retreat for our families this Autumn and Winter.

My kitchen would be more inviting if …………. it were 3 times bigger! I have a shotgun kitchen and a small one at that. The only bonus is that the dining room is right next to the kitchen and you can visit "long distance" with friends, family, etc.

My best tip for making a home seem more welcoming ….. is by trying to keep the chaos down to a minimum. Since you enter through the living room, I try to keep it and dining room picked up daily.

To give the feeling of warmth in my home I often ….. lay lap blankets on the sofas. I love to put out the blankets made for us by our friends. Then, I can share the history behind them.

In the cooler months, it is essential for me to ….. stay warm! Seriously, the cooler months lend themselves to curling up with a good book.

Some favorite Autumn/Winter recipes are ….. stews (especially veal!), chili, and homemade spaghetti sauce.

A Quick Tip for making your house more inviting …… be more focused on your guests and not your home. I missed out on having friends over because I was too concerned with the house and its state of disarray. Now, I apologize for the chaos, and enjoy having their friendship and fellowship!

home schooling ~ how we began this wild and wonderful way of life!

We are a home schooling family, but we did not set out to educate our children. Homeschooling was never even a blip on our radar screen but God, in His sovereignty, was setting the stage for us to bring our kids home.

When our twins were completing K-5 at a local public school in Alabama, my husband felt God's leading to provide a Christian education. At the time, our church hosted a Christian school. We completed the applications on the last day for early registration for church members. The children were accepted and began first grade at the Christian school. After 7 months into first grade, my husband accepted a promotion to Chattanooga, TN. During our visits and house hunting, we located a Christian school and then found a home in close proximity. The twins completed first and second grade at the school, and our youngest completed K-4 and K-5.

The following school year, 2002-2003, we were led to consider home schooling. Neither one of our sons was accepted for who they were. Our older son had autistic tendencies which kept the other kids from interacting with him. Our younger son had a speech delay and wasn't thriving in the school atmosphere. The teachers weren't able to give them the time needed for them to flourish in their acdemics or their social interactions. During this time, God had placed us in a church for 1 ½ years with a large number of home schooling families. We had already formed solid relationships with them and had learned the good, the bad, and the fun of home educating.

After a focused time of prayer and many discussions, we decided to home school our children. Our youngest came home in September with the twins following in early October 2002.

We are currently on our 9th year of home schooling. It seems the time has just flown by. I look at my 3 teenagers and wonder where it went. Weren't we just cutting and pasting, spending time at the local aquarium, and enjoying picnics at one of the parks?

I have loved spending this time with them--- working along side of them with difficult concepts, and then watching the light bulb go on! Wow, what an amazing time we have had! My twins are currently in their Junior year of high school and looking at college testing and college visits this year. My youngest son is a Freshman and is slowly acclimating to the level of work required for high school.

This has been an amazing ride. I thank God daily for His provisions and leading us to home school.

Homekeeper’s Journal ~ Children

If you have children or grandchildren, or even nieces and nephews, you know what a joy they are. God tells us that children are a blessing from Him.

Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate. Ps 127:3-5

In what ways are children a blessing to us?

They are enjoyable and entertaining! They are just as cute as they can be and a lot of fun to watch as they grown, learn and explore the world.

They are a great help to us in learning to be like Jesus. We learn self-sacrifice, patience, long-suffering, joy, love, self-control and discipline by raising a child or even by being in the life of a child and we learn what it is so be trusted and depended on completely. That’s a huge responsibility.

They are of the greatest help to us with our work. Children should be given jobs in the home to learn that they are an essential part of a family. Children can be such good help to us as we do the things we must do every day for the family.

The enlarge our impact on the world for the glory of God! I think that is partially what it means in Psalms 127 where is says ….”They will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.” Our influence goes beyond our children, through their lives and into the world.

This week the Homekeeper’s Journal is all about our children!

I can directly influence these children ….. my 3 teenagers, my son and daughter-in-law, my grandson, my "extra" daughter, and my teenagers' friends.

Some specific ways that I see my influence in my children are …. Positively --- not scared to speak their mind or call others on their "stories" and their sense of humor and demeanor. Negatively --- sarcastic tongue and judgemental attitude (not too proud of these).

The biggest area needing improvement in how I see my children is … that they are becoming wonderful young people who don't need my input in every area of their lives. I need to back off..... : (

My greatest joy in my children is … knowing they are in the family of God by nothing more than God's grace and mercy in their lives. We are still praying for my youngest son to accept Christ! Please pray with us!

The best thing I ever did for my children was … bringing them home from the Christian school to home school them. They could then learn on their own academic timetables; they could jump ahead or slow down if they needed more time on a specific subject.

One thing I want to be sure to impart to my children is …. that we are all here to serve others. Jesus himself modeled the servant attitude when he washed the feet of all the disciples, even Judas. Also, we all have others who are watching us to see if our speech, behavior, etc is in line with our Christian faith. Are we walking our talk?

This needs great prayer and thought regarding my children ….. how to direct them in their upcoming college decisions without taking over.

Dreams of Autumn...

Autumn in my kitchen means ……. chili, soup, home-made spaghetti sauce and apple pie!

Autumn in my home brings …….a sense of cooler days ahead.

I bring Autumn indoors by …….. opening the house up once the heat of summer passes.

A few favorite Autumn activities for my family are ……. hikes in the Battlefield, camping, and playing in the leaf pile!

Two favorite Autumn recipes are ……. Pumpkin Pie and homemade apple sauce.

This Autumn I would like to ……… begin a soup dinner night for our immediate neighbors so we can really get to know them. Think indoor block party!

A Day in the Life

Since we got an early start on our school year, we have found our groove. I do have a teaching schedule for all the days.... oops, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Our day begins....

7:30 am     wake up and hit the shower (to help me wake up!)
8:00 am     teenagers start waking up and having breakfast
8:30 am     begin laundry, bread baking, crock pot, etc.
                    morning chores are done
8:45 am     darling daughter hits the floor ... s l o w l y!
9:00 am     begin school... See Below

** I have chosen to take a new direction on the when and how of teaching. Since I am home schooling 4 high schoolers, I am 'teaching' only 1-2 subjects a day. During the class time, they are given their school assignments for the week. Here are my teaching days and times -

My younger two and I still spend time one-on-one on a daily basis on some of their work. This schedule allows for more in-depth teaching, while allowing the students to become responsible for their assignments. It will also guide the younger two into more independent learning.

Since we have all teenagers, their extra-curricular activities occur at night. Our 16 year old daughter, Melissa, plays 2 different varsity sports (soccer and basketball). Matthew performs in 2 different community theaters, and Michael is active in Boy Scouts. Here is what our evenings look like!

A bumpy start ~ A smoother ending

Wow, three weeks of school!  I cannot say I was ready to begin, but I decided to just jump in anyway. Our first week included some laughter, whining, and mornings that started way too early for my teens!

Week Two I was more prepared, and during the week, the last of our school books arrived. The older teens were then able to begin their U.S. History.

I have chosen to take a new direction on the when and how of teaching. Since I am home schooling 4 high schoolers, I am 'teaching' only 1-2 subjects a day.  During the class time, they are given their school assignments for the week. Here are my teaching days and times -

Matt said, "The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown is my favorite book.

I like it because the action keeps moving."

Michael responded, "Strategy guides to video games because

Melissa thought long and hard and responded, "Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. He intertwines historical fact with fictional characters to bring it to life. It is a book you can't put down until your done."

Our Home School Classroom

Our schoolroom does resemble a "classroom." Why, you ask? When our youngest began home schooling during his first grade year after being in a Christian school, he wanted a desk and a chalkboard. Later that same year, our older two came home from the same school 3 months into their third (3rd) grade year. Take a look at what we have now!

I am currently home schooling 4 teens - 2 Juniors, 1 Sophomore, and 1 Freshman!

We have not one, but TWO chalkboards! And yes, we do have schedules to keep my life sane!

I love books... these are some of the books we use!

Back to School Traditions

Do you have any fun and interesting ways to get your students excited about the new school year?

As a family, we try to schedule a FUN field trip before we dive into our coursework. Also, our local home school support group hosts a ‘Back to School’ picnic mid-August. We enjoy a picnic-style dinner and games for the kids. This is a great way to reconnect with other home schoolers before you get knee-deep into your academics.

On a more academic note, we begin our first day of school with only 2 subjects. Then each day I add another subject. We will have a full course load by the end of the second week. This helps both the students and teacher acclimate into the school year less stressfully.

Cook's Academy officially began yesterday for the new 2010-2011 school year. We started with 2-3 subjects and will add-on one more each day. This helps both the students and teacher acclimate into the school year less stressfully. The Juniors started with Health, Math, and American Literature, while the Freshman and Sophomore began with Physical Science and Math. Today we add on Classical Vocabulary for the Juniors and World Geography for the other students.

Fine Arts Curriculum.... (Did I miss something?!)

The "Arts" have always been a struggle in our home school. Out of 3 students, only 1 enjoys the "hands-on" approach to art.

We have attempted Barry Stebbing's Feed My Sheep curriculum using his DVD's to enhance our learning. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, we just never found the time to continue on a weekly basis. I'm thinking it is the fault of the teacher and her scheduling!

With 1 teenage son into community theater, we see a lot of theatrical performances. They may not be professionally done, but the plays open the family up to another aspect of Fine Arts.

We make time to go to art museums. The Hunter Museum of Art is our local art destination. Chatttanooga has a lot to offer us in "Fine Arts." There are many brick, metal, and eclectic sculptors throughout the city.

We also enjoy the Chattanooga Symphony and Orchestra who not only play in the theater but also free, open performances during the year including the 4th of July. We have listened to Bach, Beethoven, Handel and others as we learn about them and the time periods in which they composed their music.

I guess, in a very relaxed atmosphere, we have learned about the "arts."

This year 2 of my high schoolers will taking Art History with Christian World View at a local church. This class will satisfy their Fine Arts credit for High School. Per the instructor, "This class is more than art, more than history and more than worldview. We will study cultures and the art they produced and discuss how it is relevant to us today. Materials are based on college art texts and we will read Francis Scheaffer's How Shall We Then Live as well as C.S. Lewis's God in the Dock. Two field trips are planned and there will be a research paper project. This class is an unforgettable experience."

This week’s Homekeeper’s Journal is all about Beginnings ……..

Something new I would like to attempt in my kitchen ... cooking one month at a time. I'm not sure of the name, but you shop/cook/bake all the dinner meals for one month and freeze them. By doing this, you spend less time daily making dinner and save money. Click here for more information. My main problem... I don't have a separate stand alone freezer, and my side-by-side can't handle the amount of food.

When the newness wears off a relationship, you find … out who your true friends are. Who will truly accept you for who you are, not what they want you to be/do.

The new school year starts around here on ... August 3rd or 10th. I haven't bought all the curriculum yet, so I don't have the lesson plans ready. I normally don't work around the public school schedule. We like to build in time off and vacations while still finishing the bulk of our school by the middle of May.

I need to start … my science lesson plans. I think these will take the longest to set-up. I need to restart my Bible study which I let slide over the summer. This is probably why I haven't been myself most of the summer.

God’s mercies are new every morning so … I need to believe this and start each day with a clean slate. I'm horrible about carrying over the problems from the previous days.

High School Portfolios.... DONE!

This past week has seen a flurry of activity both on the computer and off. I have finally finished the 3-ring binder High School Portfolios. Now, keeping them current should be a breeze. This binder portfolio was made following Kathleen Duncan's Homeschool for High School Seminar.

Start with a 3-ring binder, add dividers (5 large tab) for the main subjects including Records, Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Fine Arts, PE/Health, and Electives. I also added an Awards section.

Behind each main tab, use dividers (8 large tab) for the actual classes such as 9th grade Grammar/Composition, US History, Spanish I, etc. For each class, I am using Donna Young's Grade and Attendance sheets to show the student's grades and information for each class/book/description, etc. If this was an outside class (not taken at home), I'm puttting the grading sheet from that teacher. Below is a picture of Matthew's French I grade sheet taken at Hilger Higher Learning. Also behind each class tab, I add 1-2 examples of the the student's work. Now, if a college wants to know which curriculum we used or the level of work, we can show them all in one place!

In the Awards Section, I am placing the original certificates in a plastic sheet protectors. Matthew currently has 2 Honor Roll certificates, 4 certificates for paging in the GA House and Senate, and his Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. I will also put any awards earned through theater and other activities he is involved in.

I have also begun typing a high school transcript. I have the main page done, but still have a ways to go. I have also set up our Grades and Attendance forms for the new school year. I'm still undecided on our American History curriculum for this year. I'm down to 2 weeks to decide and have it ready to go.

Other than portfolios, we have managed to clean the entire house and keep the vegetable garden growing. We are enjoying way too many tomatoes and zucchini.

Life is good; God is better!

I love planning each new school year. I love the smell and feel of new books even though I buy as many as possible "gently used!" Due to many circumstances, this is the first year of homeschooling that I haven't been able to attend a Curriculum Fair. And to be totally truthful, I just pulled together the Literature for both grade levels this weekend!

Some of the books will be: The Scarlet Letter, Billy Budd, Adventures of Huck Finn, Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, To Kill a Mockingbird, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Old Man and the Sea. We will also be completing Intro to Poetry by Progeny Press. We will continue with Vocabulary from Classical Roots D-E.

Grammar    ~~A Beka 11th grade Grammar V for use with their Handbook for Grammar and Composition. This will be a refresher course for them.~~ After 2 months of trying to make the A Beka program work, we finally put it aside. We will be reviewing grammar through their writing and a computer-based program Grammarlogues. Since they have a very firm foundation in grammar already, I'm not overly stressed! Next year they will be (most likely) dual enrolling at a local college and will be taking College Freshman Grammar and Composition. (Updated 11/8/10)

Saxon Advanced Math - Saxon (Matthew)

Saxon Algebra II - My daughter would prefer continuing with Teaching Textbooks, but we already own the Saxon Algebra II curriculum. Anyone have a Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2 we can borrow? PRAISE Report... a good friend had Teaching Textbook's Algebra 2 for sale, so I was able to buy it and stay in our budget! Thanks Theresa!

ACT Prep course (Hilger Higher Learning) and take test in the fall. This includes English, Reading, Math and some Science. ACT Prep course was completed on October 23 and the ACT test taken on October 25. Now, we are awaiting scores.

SAT Prep course and take test in the spring. We will be completing this prep course at home and take the SAT in May.

Art History with Christian World View. This class is more than art, more than history and more than worldview. We will study cultures and the art they produced and discuss how it is relevant to us today. Materials are based on college art texts and we will read Francis Scheaffer's How Shall We Then Live as well as C.S. Lewis's God in the Dock. Two field trips are planned and there will be a research paper project.

US History We will be using the newly revised US History - Heritage of Freedom for 11th graders from A Beka. I know they will receive comprehensive information with this program. This newly revised edition goes through the inauguration of President Obama. After purchasing the A Beka program, we found that it didn't work well for independent learners. It is written and set-up to be taught in a classroom with the teacher "teaching" something! We are entering some new curriculum territory now. I am putting together our own US History curriculum now called "US History through our Country's Presidents." It is more work for me, but the students are learning a lot of our great history. They are looking up some simple facts, quotes from the presidents, and researching US History through the years as they learn about the presidents. I will let you know how it goes! (updated 11/8/10)

Physical Education   We will be logging the hours we work out this year. Also, the whole family is working through the Boy Scout's Personal Fitness Badge which includes a 12-week fitness program. Hoping to accumulate enough for one full high school credit.

Total Health   If we have the time, I would like Matthew and Melissa to complete their health curriculum for high school. I have purchased the program through My Father's World along with their lesson plans. The students will also read I Kissed Dating Goodbye for this course.

Varsity Sports: Melissa tried out for and became a starter for our homeschool Varsity Soccer team.  She chose to continue with soccer through the winter and is now playing for a select soccer team.

Theater: Matthew continues to audition and receive parts at both the Colonnade theater and now, at the Choo Choo Centenial Theater.

Michael - 9th grader:

Writing program: The Write Foundation. This program teaches organization skills along with writing skills. I'm excited to see how well it works. I was even able to speak with the author of the program for about an hour. She was able to give me insight into the program and answered my many questions. How cool is that!

Introduction to Literature. We will be reading books and doing a couple book studies. He will also be joining his siblings and completing an Intro to Poetry unit by Progeny Press.

Grammar.  A Beka 9th Grade Grammar and Composition III. We will not be utilizing the composition part since we will be knee-deep in The Write Foundation writing program. We will continue with Spelling Power and Vocabulary from Classical Roots.

Apologia Physical Science

Around the World in 180 Days. This is a student-led curriculum which covers all 7 continents. The students are guided in their research. They learn vocabulary, geography and history of the continent, the culture and people, plants and animals, religion and current events. I'm learning alongside Michael!

Algebra 1     Saxon Algebra I or Teaching Textbook Algebra I   Why two choices you ask? We own both of these programs. Remember, my daughter refused to use Saxon math! And the WINNER is.... Saxon Algebra 1!

This week the Homekeeper’s Journal is all about SUMMER………

In my summer kitchen …….. pork bbq with fresh corn on the cob and sliced tomatoes with cucumbers, fresh honey wheat bread, fresh home-made strawberry jam on our toast, grilled chicken, bbq ribs with coleslaw.... this has been a good week!

In my summer yard ………. morning glories snaking up the mailbox, sunflowers just about to bloom, a vegetable garden that is supplying us with zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and soon watermelon, carrots, and yellow squash!

On my summer reading list ….. I love to read, but I don't have a reading list.

In my summer plans ……. working through school paperwork and a quick vacation trip to Kansas City, MO, for my son's wedding later this month.

On my summer To-Do List ……… 1) get high school homeschool records in order, 2) get curriculum ordered and set-up, 3) work on some simple home repairs, esp 2 new bath fans and strip wallpaper and repaint both bathrooms... mildew issues, 4) spend fun quality time with my kids, and 5) clean out the garage... again! I'm sure there is more on the to-do list....

Here's a slice of life at our home...

In my yard... a raised square-foot garden producing zucchini, tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumbers, green peppers, and hopefully, ice-box watermelon. Morning glories climbing up my mailbox mixed with some snap dragons and one sunflower. A lawn that is drying out due to the heat and no rain.

On my grill… Nothing today since my hubby wasn't home. In the past week, we've enjoyed grilled chicken on salad greens, hamburgers, and bbq chicken.

With my children… Michael is having a blast at Boy Scout camp; Melissa is looking forward to time with a good friend tomorrow, Matthew is continuing to work on his play.

On my mind… completing high school transcripts and portfolios; cleaning a computer of a nasty spyware virus application...6 hours of computer work in safe mode and rebooted in normal mode. So far so good...

The book of the Bible I keep finding myself turning to lately… Acts, Galatians, 1 John... I working on a Bible study on the apostle John.

I am reading… How to study, A practrical guide from a Christian perspective and 7 keys to Comprehension. Doesn't this sound so exciting. I'm trying to get a better handle on how to help one of my students.

I am looking forward to… seeing my son and fiance when they get married later in July.

What’s happening in my home….

In my kitchen… Chicken with penne pasta, salad, and Italian bread. Today, we may go to a local restaurant for a late lunch/early dinner and watch the US play in the World Cup.

With our marriage… We are taking more time to talk and spend time together (without the kids). This is becoming a special time for us.

With the children… Michael is heading off to Boy Scout camp tomorrow. He is so excited; he was completely packed last night! Melissa enjoyed her time at church camp with Natasha and states she is closer with the Lord. Matthew is continuing to work on his lines for the play which must be memorized by June 30!

Our biggest new is that my oldest son, Robert, is getting married on July 24th. This will take our family to Kansas City, Missouri for the celebration.

Around the homestead… we are enjoying the vegies from the garden. The zucchini is great! Now, the tomatoes are starting to ripen. Maybe, I'll be enjoying a beefsteak tomato later today!

In my “Inner Man"... My Inner Man needs nourishment and watering. I am attempting to do this by staying in step with my Bible study on the gospel and letters of John.

What is your Inner Man? In 2 Corinthians 4, Paul gives us a clue about what he means when he says “the inner man." In that scripture he says, "Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day." (4:16 NASB). So for Christians even though there is something about us that is getting old, decaying and deteriorating and dying..there is also something about us that is growing, becoming more alive, richer and stronger every day we live and follow Christ. That is what Paul calls our “inner man.”

This is what's happening at my house...

Too much zucchini - too little motivation!

What’s going on in my kitchen this week ….. tuna casserole, grilled chicken, homemade fresh blueberry pancakes, and a lot of zucchini side dishes.

This week, I have simply not been able to get a handle on … getting done what needs to get done. I am in serious need of motivation!!

Its so hot here ….. that the teens won't even go out and hang out. The basketball hoop is forgotten during the hot summer months and they seem to forget that the lawn needs mowing...

If I could have a pantry built to order ….. I would need a new house! Since I don't have any type of pantry now, I wouldn't be too picky. Any storage would be a blessing!

The one place other than where I am that I might like to live is ….. near my grandson and son so that would put me in Texas in a couple of months.

The most comfortable shoes I have ever had ….. are my on-sale sandals from Payless Shoes. I love them so much, I bought all they had the fall of 2008. This way, when they were no longer wearable, I already had replacements. Sad day... they no longer carry them and I need new ones!

My favorite things about summer ….. I love the longer days; the growing garden; less stress due to less commitments; reading or in my case - catching up on reading!

I know I need to …… start and complete the high school portfolios and transcripts (x 4 students). I also need to decide on history and literature curriculum for the upcoming school year.

What’s happening in my home...

In my kitchen… we enjoyed Asian chicken last night! YUM! Grilled pork chops are on the menu, but I don't if we'll have them today or tomorrow. Rod wants to take the kids to the Chattanooga Football (soccer) game tonight.

With our marriage… spent a couple of hours one-on-one with Rod this week. Nothing exciting, but we had numerous things to talk about and decisions to make. Even though it wasn't a romantic walk, I enjoy all the time we get to spend together minus the kids. Rod, Happy Father's Day!

With the children… Melissa is home from camp; Matthew was offered a part in "Dearly Departed" and is walking on air; Michael is looking forward to Boy Scout camp... countdown - 8 days!

Around the homestead… I enjoyed a really good thunder storm today. I stood on the porch and watched the storm. I love thunder storms!

In my “Inner Man”…. keeping up with my Bible study, praying all through the day. I find myself fighting off mild depression these days. I don’t want to give in.

What’s going on in my kitchen this week ….. home cooked dinners!

Every time I try to ….. work on my kids' high school paperwork, I get side-tracked (like right now)! Procrastination is a bad thing, I know, and I'll soon run out of summer to complete these.

Thinking very heavily on this right now … serious school decisions and history/literature plans for the upcoming school year.

I wish my mother had told me….. (1) what periods were before I had my first one and thought I was dying, and (2) about sex, not the details (God forbid, how embarrassing!), but God's plan for sex and the consequences of having sex before marriage.

I wish a mature believer had told me... that walking with the Lord requires daily death to self. For a person who likes to be in control, this is not any easy thing to do, but God is continually working on me in this area.

I am determined to ….. to see Jesus as the apostle John did. I want to be awed and enamored with Jesus as if I, myself, am witnessing the miraculous healings, feedings, teachings, and resurrection.

What’s happening in my home..….

In my kitchen… homemade honey wheat bread, steaks on the grill with a salad and vegie. Just finished making homemade fresh strawberry jam. Yummy! We have a full refrigerator/freezer. Praise the Lord!

With our marriage… going strong … we are in need of some quality time though, without kids, just to be "two" again!

With the children… daughter heading to church camp with a friend tomorrow, the rest of the family will enjoy a Third Day concert at Riverbend in Chattanooga on Tuesday, and I'm planning on working on high school transcripts/portfolios this week. * Note - so far, new cleaning schedule is working!

Around the homestead… watching the garden wilt in the 96+ F heat wave. Guess I need to water twice a day. The broccoli isn't giving me flowers now, so I'll replant in the fall and pray for a bumper crop. We have a chance of picking up a second frig/freezer which will give me more freezer room. This is a stepping stone to finding a stand-up freezer.

In my “Inner Man”…. learning how to worship the awesome God I serve in spirit and in truth! Corporate worship is wonderful, heart lifting, spirit refreshing.... Private worship is lacking big time.

What’s happening in my home?….

In my kitchen… Tacos for dinner. I'm trying to eat better and healthier, so I'm having more soup/salads for lunch. I am also looking forward to being able to eat vegetables directly out of my garden! The radishes are good, but I'm salivating for the tomatoes!

With our marriage… things are good right now, but as with all marriages, they haven’t always been. There have been some really hard times in the past 17+ years. But we’ve hung on, sometimes it seems like we hung on to tatters, and God has been faithful to us. It was hard to imagine that when things were as tough as they got that we’d make it. But we did. Our marriage is so much better now because of the peaks and valleys God walked us through. God is so good!

With the children… we are working on heart attitudes and "needs versus wants." Even the parents need God's work in these areas.

Around the homestead… We are beginning a new house cleaning schedule. I hope it goes well; in theory, it looks really good!

In my “Inner Man”…. working on children's disrespectful attitudes. I know I'm not responding/reacting well and hence, not being a good, Biblical role model. My prayer is that God will show me the true heart issues/problems with them, not just their outward actions and words.

Proverbs 31 woman... me? Not!

This is my definition of “Homekeeping” ……… manages the home and children; oversees the shopping and food preparation; chauffeuring when needed (when is it not needed!); stays available for her husband and his needs; imparts Christian faith to the kids by teaching, encouraging, role modeling. See Proverbs 31.

My favorite place to practice the profession of homekeeping is ….. #1: the kitchen - showing love throught the food I make; #2: our schoolroom - showing love to our kids by home educating them; #.3: couponing to save money.

I do find joy in keeping my home and I think the reason is ….. because I want the best for my family.

At this point in my life, this is what I believe my children, husband and/or other family members think about our home…. that it looks fine and doesn't need to be cleaned every week. I am far from weekly cleaning, but the kids and I are working toward that end. My husband never complains about the housekeeping, bless him! I think others see the love in our home not the mess.

The things I wish someone had told me about homekeeping when I was young.… that it doesn't just happen all by itself. It does take work and planning, especially if you home educate.

The messages that I received about homemaking and being a wife/mother when growing up were ….. that it is a blessing to be able to stay home with your kids and manage your home well. Thanks, Mom!

6 blessings that God has given me this week are …. my faith in Christ, a loving husband (even though he is sick), caring friends, wonderful kids, the ability to stay-at-home with my kids, home schooling.....

What’s happening in my home….

My teens have enjoyed 3 weeks off from school which ended today. Needless to say, I am not the most popular person at our home! We continue with math through the summer. Each of the students are in the middle of their math courses. We usually do math + one other subject. I haven't pushed the "plus 1" ---- YET!

In my kitchen… BBQ Pork for sandwiches with cole slaw and homemade fries.

With our marriage… trying to find the time to spend together that does not include kids or chores!

With the children… stir crazy already. I believe they think I'm here to entertain/chauffeur them, etc. NOT!

Around the homestead… garden growing well except the broccoli. Not sure if they will produce the florets or not; husband mowing yard 'cause kids aren't. : ( Trying to find a starting place for all the paperwork, grades, transcripts, etc that I need to catch up on and get ahead on.

What’s happening in my home….

We are volunteering at J-Fest, a Christian Music Festival in Chattanooga, this weekend. A time to give back as a family and enjoy some great Christian artists.

In my kitchen… I am looking forward to being home more next week so I can cook normal dinners again.

With our marriage… we are working through this financial valley together. Closings are scheduled for next week. Pray all goes well.

With the children… one is impatiently waiting to see if he got a part in Dearly Departed; daughter is going to a church summer camp with a friend soon; one looking forward to Boy Scout camp.

Around the homestead… rain, rain, rain. At least I don't need to use my water to water the garden! Anything to decrease the bill.

The kitty who adopted us!

This is Pusscat. When he moved in with his family next door, he adopted our front, and later, back porch. Since I am allergic to him, we now go through a lot of hand soap. I'm so glad our neighbors are able to supply my kids with a "pet!"

Over the years, he has slowed down. He no longer chases the birds and shares them with us. Now, he is taunted by the birds while he "rests" on the picnic table. Gee, I wonder how old he really is??

The pace at which this garden is growing amazes me! I have placed potted marigolds in the garden. When room gets tight, I'll put them around the garden. I've been told they help keep the pests/bugs at bay. Do you think they will help my broccoli?!?!

What’s happening in my home?

We have been having a lot of pop-up storms. The rain alone has almost filled my bucket which I use to water the small garden.

In my kitchen…homemade, warm honey wheat bread.

With our marriage… we are looking forward to more time together when my hubby's schedule becomes less hectice. This is good and bad... he is a realtor and busyness hopefully equals closings!

With the children… one is auditioning for a new play tomorrow night; another is rereading a book for the millionth (only slight exaggeration!) time; another just wants to know what we are eating for each meal.

Around the homestead… a well deserved break from schooling. Kids are enjoying sleeping in and having a more relaxed day.

In my kitchen ….. homemade Cinnamon Raisin Bread, or should I say, what is left of it after we attacked it as it came out of the oven yesterday!

My marriage….. growing stronger over the last 18 years. Why is it that it takes the rough times for us to truly bond as one? Why do we always get complacent during the easy times?

With my children …… two 16 year olds looking for jobs and one 14 year old looking forward to Boy Scout camp. My 26 year old is looking forward to quality time with his son, Xander, who just turned 5!

I feel so relieved when ….. ? I'm drawing a blank. In our school, I will feel relieved when I get the transcripts and high school portfolios caught up. But then, I know I will have another perceived deadline, etc. to make.

My spiritual life is on a plateau.... it's neither flourishing or declining. I love the Lord and want to be in His will always, but don't have the desire for daily quiet time/Bible reading, etc. My desire is there, yet I lack motivation. Keep me in your prayers.

If I am honest, the thing that keeps me from praying as much as I should is ….. busy-ness. I feel I have too many thing to accomplish and don't put God first in my priorities. Yes, I'm good with sending up emergency prayers, but daily time with God.... lacking.

I see God moving in my life and how I react to situations. I have a habit of blowing things out of proportion and God is continually reteaching me what is important versus what is not. I focus on the thing of this world and get bent out of shape. God is calling me to focus on the eternal things. This includes the education the my kids, my time with God, my relationships, everything.

This is in the deepest, darkest recesses of my mind, but should be moved into the light …. trust in God to supply all our needs during the real estate recession. We have already seen His people in action; yet, I still worry which just wastes time.

Fall Creek Falls Family/Home school camp ~ 2010

Our family home for the week - a 12 x 12 foot cabin with 1 electric outlet, one hanging light bulb, and one mouse named Mr. Jingles!

The dining hall. All the families were responsible for their own breakfast and lunch. All the campers ate dinner together.

There always seemed to be a volleyball game either beginning or ending. Melissa had quick reflexes whenever the ball or an elbow came near her face.

Matthew enjoyed a 9 hole game of golf at the Fall Creek Falls course.

The Swimming Hole! The kids swam in the ol' swimming hole just above the small waterfall. It is so deep that there is a diving board for it! The peaceful creek is after the "waterfall." This was a great place for the younger kids to play and chase whatever was swimming around them!

Tie Dyeing! The camp directors are experts at making Tie Dye shirts, hats, aprons, etc....

All in all we had a great time. The only downside was that Rod was not able to spend any true family time with us. He joined us for dinner on Saturday night and left just after lunch on Sunday.

Now that I'm feeling a bit better (back and neck problems), I'm off to the stores again. I spent over 3 hours last night sorting and filing the coupons which had accumulated. Then, I sat down with the sale ads and set up my shopping day. Here we go...

Life with the Cooks....

In My Kitchen …. Memorial Day Picnic! Hamburgers, hot dogs, deviled eggs, baked beans, homemade potato salad, watermelon, and homemade Cinnamon Raisin Bread. YUM!

With The Children ….. setting up any summer plans they have or would like to have. Michael - Boy Scout Camp, Matthew - a new play (hopefully), Melissa - church camp with a friend if we can swing it.

What I’m Reading … 1/2 Price Living: Secrets to Living Well on One Income by Ellie Kay. I am trying to learn new ways to live frugally but well.

What I Have Been Learning … that God's timing is always best; I need to trust His timing more and rely less on when I think things should happen.

What I’ve Been Noticing …. that lack of sleep = one unhappy and impatient mom.

On The Back Burner of My Mind …. how best to use my less hectic summer months. I have many projects to work on and feel overwhelmed as to where to start.

What’s cooking in my kitchen this week is …… not sure! Just came home from camping for a week and haven't even looked in the cupboards!

The one thing that needs to be done the around here the most is …… maintenance and home repairs including 2 bathroom fans, mildew removal in one bath, toilet repair, and painting the outside of the house.

If someone went through my trash, they’d think …… I never cook (at least not this past week!). My dear husband lived on leftovers and frozen food.

A memory of mine that involves the smell of vanilla ……. ahhhh, French Vanilla Coffee! Peaceful, relaxing.... Enjoy sipping while reading a good book!

My mind keeps on wandering back to ……. time with my own grandmother and thankful I will see her again.

I need God’s grace to ….. parent the teens that He has entrusted us with.

Something that I am anticipating is …… spending time with my grandson; hopefully next month.

Here’s What’s happening …..

In My Kitchen …. making homemade Chicken Pot Pie with all fresh vegies! YEAH!

With Our Marriage …. through all the highs and lows, we have really grown together as one. The Lord has kept our love growing over 18 years now.

With The Children ….. official school is done for the year. Now we take a couple weeks off and then begin a more relaxed summer schedule including Math plus one other subject.

What I’m Reading … nothing... I am way too busy. BUT, next week I'll be catching up on a lot of my reading while camping!

What I Have Been Learning … that good Christian friends are hard to find, but will love you through good and bad times.

What I’ve Been Noticing …. that I'm getting more ADD symptoms as I grow older.

Something that pleases me … my garden is growing!

Asian Chicken

Asian Chicken Stir-Fry

Prep time: 10 minutes Total: 25 minutes

4 servings, 2 cups each

8 oz angel hair pasta, uncooked

2 cups broccoli florets (both fresh and frozen work well)
* I double the recipe and use 6 c. broccoli

1lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips
* I cut into bite size pieces during cook time

½ c. Kraft Asian toasted Sesame dressing

2 TBSP soy sauce

¼ tsp. each ground ginger, garlic powder, crushed red pepper

1/3 c. chopped dry roasted peanuts (optional)

Cook pasta as directed on package, adding broccoli to the boiling water for the last 3 minutes of the pasta cooking time.

Meanwhile, spray large nonstick skillet with cooking spray; heat on medium-high heat. Add chicken; cook 6-8 minutes or until cooked through, stirring occasionally. Stir in dressing, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and crushed red pepper; cook 1 minute, stirring occasionally.

Drain pasta mixture; place in large bowl. Add chicken mixture; mix lightly. Spoon evenly into 4 serving bowls; sprinkle with the peanuts.

Substitute: Use whatever vegetables you have on hand, such as snow peas, sliced bell peppers, sliced carrots or chopped red onions, instead of the broccoli.

Homeschool Prom

My daughter went to her first prom on April 23, 2010. She went with 5 girlfriends and had a ball. One family graciously rented a limousine for the group. What a special treat! They met at the Colonnade in Ringgold, GA, and headed to downtown Chattanooga for pictures. (See below) Then off to Foodworks for dinner followed by the PROM! The girls ended their exciting evening with a sleepover at one of the girl's home. A great time was had by all!

My garden is growing and beginning to produce vegetables! For many of you, this is no big deal. But for me, who normally does not have a green thumb, this is truly amazing. See what else is growing...

Radishes have sprouted...

Carrots are starting to peek through...

Green pepper plants are also thriving!

The cucumber bush isn't looking too well. I picked up a different type and planted it yesterday. This plant grows on a vine.

Broccoli are growing almost as quickly as the Beefsteak tomatoes!

The Body of Christ is amazing!

I know it isn't Thursday, but today I was so humbled and overwhelmed by the love of friends. The real estate business has been unusually slow and we have had to use our savings and other monies to keep the bills paid. Yesterday I had an impromptu conversation with a good friend about gardening, couponing, shopping, bills, teens, schooling, etc. It was great catching up with her as it had been a couple of months.

This morning, her and her husband brought us at least 2 weeks of groceries! How humbling is that! Rod and I were both speechless and grateful. In Acts 2.42-45 we learn about true fellowship of believers in Christ. Acts 2.45b states, "they gave to anyone as he had need." These wonderful friends of ours are living and breathing God's Word in their lives. We are the recipients of Jesus' love through them!

God Bless our friends now and always!

Overall Percent Saved: 48 %

My goal is to save 50 % or more each week.

If I returned the head of cauliflower-which was not on sale- maybe, just maybe, I would have had my 50 %. But then I wouldn't be enjoying my home-made Chicken Pot Pie!
